This newly installed detective isn’t the typical law enforcement officer.
A Californian police force has decided to promote one of its German Shepherd patrol dogs to the new title, which is a first for them.
Jena received the distinction from the Escondido Police Department after battling crime for the last five years by helping to locate drugs.
A statement said: ‘The decision was made to promote Jena to detective where her skills could be used to assist detectives with narcotic interdiction and she would not be subject to the physical demands of a patrol service dog.’
The canine was promoted along with her police officer handler, according to lifewithdogs.tv.
Lieutenant Eric Skaja added: ‘She’s not our only drug dog, but she’s probably one of the most successful drug dogs we’ve had.’
