So, the Pope has made a startling confession. No, not defrauding the Vatican coffers or even lip-synching his Sunday prayers in St Peter’s Square.

Much, much more shocking – it transpires that the highly esteemed Bishop of Rome has not watched telly since 1990.

Imagine. He lives in a world without ‘Celebrity Big Brother’, ‘Gogglebox’ or even – grab the smelling salts – ‘Come Dine with Me’.

Which means that these ground-breaking shows, all of which made their debut in the same year he switched off the box for good (not necessarily with a remote control, either), would have been the last bits of TV he enjoyed…
