When it comes to outlandish performance art, we’ve been previously impressed by the guy who spent a whole 24 hours searching for a needle in a haystack, and equally reviled by the artist who nailed his own testicles to the ground in Moscow.
But in terms of sheer randomness, nothing can top this artist, who has decided to film himself sitting and smiling for four hours a day.
Benjamin Bennett has recorded 31 videos of the smile-a-thons to date, and has admitted that his preparation for the meditative task simply involves having a glass of water and a quick wee, before broadcasting the epic on YouTube and Google Hangout.
Speaking to Vice, he attempted to explain his reasons for the performance, or, more accurately, his lack of them.
He said: ‘It seemed like something that the internet was lacking. It seemed like it needed to be done, and nobody else was going to do it.
‘There isn’t really a purpose. My inbox is full of people asking me why I’m doing this, but I don’t think that question is really applicable to this type of activity.’
His commitment to the project is impressive too, having admitted that he refused to interrupt one of the sessions when he realised that his flat was being burgled.
Explaining the moment that the intruder entered, which is visible in the above video, he said: ‘It was around Thanksgiving, and I heard a knock on the door, and I was the only one home. Then I heard some loud bangs and somebody lurking around downstairs while I was upstairs.
‘My heart was beating like crazy, but I knew that not reacting was the best thing to do, and now there’s that guy out there with his own crazy story to tell.’
It’s an undoubtedly bonkers project, but the world is surely better off with a man who’s willing to smile for four hours a day.
